Armistice Centenary Event

The WWI Armistice Centenary Event at Burton Green was centred around a display of soldier silhouettes, and a poppy cascade, created by children from Burton Green School.

Local residents had also placed British Legion wooden crosses to remember individuals from their own families, and soldiers who had lived in Burton Green, at the foot of the display.

On the afternoon of 11th November, there was an Armistice-themed tea in the village hall, attended by 75 residents and friends of the village.

The roles of soldiers from Burton Green who took part in WWI was briefly explained. There is more information about those soldiers on this page:

That was followed by a performance from the Burton Green Village Choir, and then communal singing of some popular war time songs.

At 7pm, a Last Post was sounded, followed by the lighting of an Armistice Beacon in an adjacent field. It was estimated that 200 residents had turned out to watch, lining both sides of the road. This was the scene looking along Cromwell Lane...

Produce Show 2nd September

Although it has been a challenging growing year due to the weather, we hope that everyone will help support this popular event, either by entering produce or by attending with your families.

All exhibits should be brought to the hall on the Sunday morning  between 07:30 - 10:00
Judging takes place 10:00 - 13:00
Refreshments open at 13:00

Produce Show 10th September 2017

The annual Produce Show takes place on Sunday 10th September at the village hall.

If you have any Plants or Produce that we can sell at the show please deliver to the hall either after 4pm on Saturday 9th September or during the morning of the show.

Also if you have any books or magazines that we can sell, ideally please deliver to the hall on the Saturday after 4pm, give to any committee member in advance.

Burton Green Scarecrow Competition 2016

We need your help to fill the Greenway between Cromwell Lane Bridge (towards Berkswell) to the National Grid Wood entrance. It may be the last year we will be able to do this. We have had some great scarecrows in 2012 and 2014. We hope you will help us make 2016 our very best.

Registration is on June 18th, 10am-12 am at the Village Hall. You can then take your crow to your chosen spot.

Guidelines for Scarecrow Competition Entries

Maximum height of scarecrow is 2 metres.

Your scarecrow should show resourcefulness and creativity!  Try to incorporate natural materials and / or recycled or found objects.

Your scarecrow should be freestanding, so that it can be staged along the Greenway without disturbing the vegetation and wildlife.  It could be upright or sitting down or be perched in a tree – you will be able to choose how it is displayed and the location.

You may use props or accessories to enhance your Scarecrow, but the organisers cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage or theft of these items, or of the Scarecrows themselves.

Your scarecrow should be inoffensive and designed in good taste and decency for a family audience.

Entries should be brought to the Village Hall for registration on Saturday 18 June between 10 am and 12 noon.  You will then be given an entry number and you can then install your scarecrow on the Greenway ready for the exhibition. Cromwell Lane Bridge – National Grid Wood entrance along the Greenway. Scarecrows should be be collected  from their positions after 5 pm on Sunday 10 July.  Any scarecrows uncollected after 6 pm on Monday 11th July will be removed to the front garden of 293 Cromwell Lane for collection & subsequent recycling.    

The Made in Burton Green group reserves the right to photograph entries for promotionalpurposes, and the photographs will belong to the group.          

If a scarecrow is deemed unsafe in any way, the organisers reserve the right to remove it.      

You will be asked to give your scarecrow a name for the exhibition, so use your imagination to bring him/her to life and have fun getting creative!

Competition Voting slips & sculptural trail maps will be available  at the Village Hall  25th June, 12 noon -5pm  & 26th June, 10am-4pm. Results announced at 4.45pm at the Hall.

Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration

Assistance Required

If anyone could give a hand at the school on either Friday 4.30pm to help put up the marquee; or on Sunday morning (10am) to set up the stalls; or on Sunday afternoon to help - even just to give a short break to whoever is manning a stall ( 2 – 6); or at the end to carry items back into school and/or help take down the marquee, we would be very grateful.

Please visit the Scarecrows and Art work which is currently being displayed on The Greenway, National Grid Wood and Red Lane.  This has all been done by local residents and local children and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face! It will all be displayed until 10th July.

This weekend the village hall will also be open for lunch and light refreshments, tea, coffee cakes, etc. Saturday 12-5pm, Sunday 10-5pm.

At the hall you can pick up a Scarecrow voting form as well as meet with local craft artists which include machine embroidery demos by a local textile artist, wood work demonstration and locally made glasswork.

If anyone is unable to do the walk then there will be a slide show to watch on a laptop at the hall.

Finally, don’t forget your wellies or sensible shoes as it is still a little muddy in the woods!

This year’s event will incorporate an exhibition, a scarecrow competition and a sculpture trail on the theme of “Larger than Life”, and visitors can enjoy them all with a short circular walk taking in the Kenilworth Greenway and the National Grid Wood.  Local community groups, nurseries and the school have also contributed to this community project so come and see what we’ve been up to in the woods - younger visitors will particularly enjoy our Peter Rabbit and Hungry Caterpillar exhibits!

The exhibition at the Village Hall will feature photography, painting, ceramics, jewellery and textiles, with craft demonstrations and opportunities to purchase works and to talk to the artists.  Opening times are 12pm to 5pm on Saturday 25th, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday 26th June.  Refreshments, light lunches and home-baked cakes will be available, and the Village Choir led by Seb Farrall will be performing at 4pm on Sunday 26th.

The scarecrow competition will be held during the weekend, and visitors to the Made in Burton Green events will be encouraged to vote for their favourite scarecrow, with the winner announced on the Sunday afternoon.  The scarecrows will be exhibited along the Greenway at Burton Green and maps of their locations will be available for visitors.  The winner will be announced at 4.30 on Sunday 26th at the village hall.

Made in Burton Green 2016

The dates [18th June- 3rd July] coincide with Warwickshire Open Studios and we will have a page advert in the brochure for the event and we are part of the Coventry trail. The Scarecrows and Sculptures are remaining for a third week this year till 10th July.


Information for Exhibitors at the Hall 25-26 June  

We have access to the Hall  7-9 pm  Friday 24th June, and before the noon opening on Saturday. 25th, .for the exhibitors to set up, and to set up the café.

A small donation of £10 towards the cost of hiring of the Hall and a homemade cake for the café would be appreciated.

Please let us know if you require a socket, large / small table or display screen.

We can provide a white sheet for the table if you do not have one.

BG School will be exhibiting their art work too.

Please let us know if you would like to Exhibit at the hall. Please let us know by 15th April.

NB Scarecrow registration 10 am -12 noon, 18th June at VH open to all.
Owners will then  place their crows along the Greenway between Cromwell Lane Bridge and National Grid Wood entrance.

Sunday 10th July  after 5pm by 5pm  Monday 11th July. Sculptures will also be removed from  the National Grid Wood.

Burton Green’s biennial community arts project will be held on 

25th/26th June 2016 

as part of Warwickshire Open Studios, and planning is now underway.  

The theme for the 2016 outdoor sculpture exhibition is “Larger than Life”, 

& events will include the popular scarecrow competition, & an arts & crafts fair 

& cafe in the hall.

There will be a first meeting to generate ideas and plans on

Tuesday 29th September, 8pm, at 293 Cromwell Lane. 

Anyone interested in getting involved would be warmly welcomed, and it’s a 

great way to get to know the community.  We need your input, ideas and 

creativity to make a success of the project, and everyone will be able to make a 

contribution of some kind, whether or not you see yourself as artistic!  

If you would like to exhibit at the arts and crafts fair please also get in touch.

Chicken wire, wire coat hangers, old cotton sheets / plain wool blankets (any 

sculptures we are looking for:

colours), oddments of fabrics, ribbon, etc.

Also needed 

Usable white table linen, damask, lace and embroidered along with napkins to 

use for exhibitions, village hall cafe and occasional events.
