Residents’ views/concerns:
Hickory’s: thanks were given to Hickory’s for hosting a coffee morning for Rona and Janet Stanworth. The latter wished to talk about her memories of visiting the Peeping Tom in the past. It was agreed that if a framed photo of the old Peeping Tom sign could be provided, Hickory’s staff will hang it on a wall in the pub. However, the picture unearthed was not deemed suitable.
Fly tipping in Hob Lane had been reported to Solihull MBC with no response so far.
Update on and discussion of Residents’ Association initiatives and issues:
HS2 issues
The Parish Council was taking the lead on land acquisition matters. BGRA had raised the matter of the visual impact of concrete. A meeting of the Working Group was to be held with Sir Jeremy Wright MP and Saquib Batti, MP for Meriden on December 19th.
Community Fund
Nothing to report.
AGM debrief
It was generally accepted that the Village Meeting which was a collaboration between BGRA and the Village Hall committee had been a good idea. People aired their views and the HS2 representatives had been very honest in their responses. Next time, we need to insist that anyone wishing to speak should use the microphones provided to ensure all attendees can hear any questions and comments.
Action: both committees
There had been a good turnout and the Village Hall committee was thanked for the refreshments.
Flower tubs decision
Thanks were given to Hilary Cox for replanting the flower tubs and to her and Mary for the armistice display.
Christmas cards and Santa’s sleigh
The winning design from the Burton Green schoolchildren had been chosen and the high standard of entries was noted. Faith was arranging the tokens as prizes.
Action: Faith
See Matters Arising regarding Santa’s Sleigh.
Christmas tree arrangements
HS2 are supplying a Christmas tree which will be delivered to the Village Hall on December 1st. Hickinbottoms and Hibberds will deal with its erection on the Coronation Verge and its decoration.
Action: Judi
Following a secret ballot the winning choice for receipt of the funds raised from the Santa Sleigh was Warwickshire Young Carers with Canley Food Bank as second choice.
Oak tree. Mary has this in hand and a site is being chosen. She will arrange for a plaque and Andy Gibbs will provide deer protection.
Action: Mary
Bugle
The next edition of the Bugle will be distributed in the first week of December. Thanks were given to Mary for her ongoing work on this.
Parish Council Report
The playground in Red Lane was now completed but it was noted that it is still underused. An oak tree adjoining the car park on the Cala site needs attention. An email has been sent to Solihull MBC about the state of the road in Hob Lane. They have agreed it will be resurfaced and it is hoped this will be before increased traffic uses the lane once the Cromwell Lane bridge is closed for a significant period in 2026.
Any Other Business:
It was reported that a bush in Red Lane needs trimming back further. It is just beyond the Broadwells site going down the road.
The funeral was reported of Sue Patterson, former head teacher at Leek Wootton School which is federated with Burton Green Academy. The committee recorded its condolences to Sue’s family.
Rob said that he would continue his negotiations with the IndieGo bus company after the closure of the Cromwell Lane bridge. He was thanked for his perseverance.
Action: Rob
A comment was made that once HS2 started to sell off the houses it was currently renting out, priority should be given to current Burton Green residents.
Date of next Meetings in 2026:
Further meeting dates are booked as follows:
January 26
March 23
May 11
July 27
